Welcome to the Sixth Form

Many exciting opportunities await students in the Sixth Form at Hymers, whether they are continuing with us from Year 11 or joining us for the first time in Year 12.

Our culture is one of aspiration and every pupil will be encouraged to achieve their very best inside the classroom, and take part in the extensive range of activities offered outside of the classroom.

This means that as well as first-rate teaching in a large range of A Level and BTEC courses taught in small class sizes, our Sixth Form students also have plenty of opportunities beyond their lessons. They can be part of our successful sports teams, receive expert music tuition, perform in outstanding plays and musicals, volunteer at local community projects, take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme or join in or help run one of over 100 clubs and activities available in the Senior School.

We are also able to harness our extensive network of former students (Old Hymerians) across the globe who have excelled in a huge variety of career pathways. They are able to offer work experience, careers guidance and talks to our current pupils to inspire them with new career ideas and possibilities. Through these networks we can open doors to onward opportunities for our Sixth Formers.

Curriculum

At Hymers Sixth Form, students generally choose three subjects (four in certain circumstances). As well as A Levels and BTECs, we offer a number of independently studied courses, such as the Extended Project Qualification and the Certificate in Financial Studies.

We usually ask that students have six GCSEs at grade 6 and above, as well as grade 7 in the subjects they are wishing to study at A Level (where applicable).

Students are supported through their studies via a tutor, typically in small groups of 12, who meet daily. They are also invited to weekly lectures from interesting and thought-provoking external speakers ranging from a Holocaust survivor to hypnotist Martin Taylor.

Sixth Form facilities

The Hymers College campus is like no other in Hull. Students can benefit from the fitness suite, swimming pool, theatre, tennis courts and modern-spec all-weather astro pitch, all set in a beautiful historic site just 10 minutes from the city centre.

The campus also benefits from a dedicated Art and Design Centre, a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre with access to the latest technology and a Music Centre boasting a recording studio and band room and hosting over 400 lessons a week on strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar, piano and voice.

Sixth Form students also have their own dedicated centre with their own Junior Common Room, dining facilities, computer suites, study areas and socialising hubs. Students are encouraged to use our Learning Resource Centre, which has areas for silent study and independent learning, a skill vital for university life and further education.
